EDUCATION: Art Makes a Permanent Impression
June 30, 2009
BERLIN — The Stephen Decatur High School Arts in Education program is permanently on display. All you have to do is walk in the main front entrance or the main back entrance of SDHS and look up. What you will see is a series of stained glass windows created by the students of art teacher, Cynthia Pilchard and visiting stained glass artist, Lucinda Shaw.
Through the Arts in Education program, students created individual designs that became a complete panorama. From the process, students learned how to create and cut a glass design, how to copper foil, solder, putty, apply a patina finish and install windows. Additionally, they learned the values of setting goals, team work, problem solving, craftsmanship and pride.
The Arts in Education program is seeking funding to complete the last four windows during the 2009-2010 school year. If you are interested in supporting this project, contact Pilchard at 410-641-2171 or pilchardsdhs@yahoo.com or SDHS Principal Lou Taylor at 41-641-2171.
